BEIJING: At least 27 people have been killed in a "violent terror attack" at a train station in the southwestern Chinese city of Kunming by a group of unidentified people brandishing knives, state media said on Sunday.<br /><br />Another 162 were injured, the official Xinhua news agency added. It said the attack had taken place late on Saturday evening.<br /><br />State television said on its official microblog that the incident had been deemed a "violent terror attack".<br /><br />Xinhua, citing one of its reporters on the scene, said that several suspects had been detained.<br /><br />Kunming resident Yang Haifei told Xinhua that he was buying a ticket when he saw a group of people, mostly wearing black, rush into the station and start attacking bystanders.<br /><br />"I saw a person come straight at me with a long knife and I ran away with everyone," he said. Those who were slower were caught by the attackers. "They just fell on the ground."<br /><br />Graphic pictures on the Twitter-like microblogging service Sina Weibo showed bodies covered in blood lying on the ground at the station.<br /><br />There was no immediate word on who was responsible.<br /><br />State television's microblog said domestic security chief Meng Jianzhu was on his way to the scene.<br /><br />Weibo users took to the service to describe details of what happened, though many of those posts were quickly deleted by government censors, especially those that described the attackers, two of whom were identified by some as women.<br /><br />Others condemned the attack.<br /><br />"No matter who, for whatever reason, or of what race, chose somewhere so crowded as a train station, and made innocent people their target - they are evil and they should go to hell," wrote one user.<br /><br />The attack comes at a particularly sensitive time as China gears up for the annual meeting of parliament, which opens in Beijing on Wednesday and is normally accompanied by a tightening of security across the country.<br /><br />China has blamed similar incidents in the past on Islamist extremists operating in the restive far western region of Xinjiang, though such attacks have generally been limited to Xinjiang itself.<br /><br />China says its first major suicide attack, in Beijing's Tiananmen Square in October, involved militants from Xinjiang, home to the Muslim Uighur people, many of whom chafe at Chinese restrictions on their culture and religion.<br /><br />Hu Xijin, editor of the influential Global Times newspaper, published by the ruling Communist Party's official People's Daily, wrote on his Weibo that the government should say who is suspected of the attack as soon as possible.<br /><br />"If it was Xinjiang separatists, it needs to be announced promptly, as hearsay should not be allowed to fill the vacuum," Hu wrote..--REUTERS</div>

LONDON: British house prices recorded their biggest annual rise in nearly four years this month despite a slowdown in the month-on-month rate of growth, data from mortgage lender Nationwide showed on Friday.<br /><br />House prices rose 0.6 percent in February, the slowest pace of monthly growth since June last year and down slightly from an upwardly revised increase of 0.8 percent in January, Nationwide said in a statement.<br /><br />But in year-on-year terms, house prices in February were 9.4 percent higher than in the same month last year, stronger than a rise of 8.8 percent in the 12 months to January and the biggest annual jump since May 2010.<br /><br />Prices in the three months to February also rose strongly, growing by 3.0 percent compared to the previous three-month period. January saw a similar increase, a rate of growth last seen in November 2009 when prices were bouncing from a trough reached earlier that year.<br /><br />Prices were being pushed up by a shortage of properties coming onto the market, in particular new homes, as well as record low interest rates, easier mortgages and growing consumer confidence, Nationwide's chief economist Robert Gardner said.<br /><br />"Price growth is being supported by the fact that the supply of housing remains constrained, with housing completions still well below their pre-crisis levels, which was already insufficient to keep up with the pace of household formation," Gardner said in a statement.<br /><br />Prices remained about 3 percent below their peak in 2007, Nationwide said.<br /><br />The Bank of England has said it is watching the housing market closely. Most officials have played down suggestions that it could be overheating but one policymaker, Martin Weale, said last week he was worried that house prices were "very elevated"..--REUTERS</div>
